Phather Phill’s Prayer
Heavenly Father, You have given us many gifts, of those at the top of the list are those of your spirit within us, healthy minds and bodies. Forgive us Lord when we have damaged any of these gifts. For when we do we suffer. Fortunately You have left Your door open to seek relief and forgiveness. Let us not try to use Your grace as a never ending escape from our own folly. Let us come to You with a humble and forgiving heart to experience the relief that only You can administer. All this we ask in Your son’s name. Amen!

Special Announcements
Chris McAlpine brought his wife, Beth McAlpine, today. Beth is a volunteer that coordinates sponsorships for the PVS Winterfest Fundraiser. The board recently approved a donation for $500 to PVS and Chris presented Beth with a check for them at today’s meeting.
Roland Rapp was presented an Optimist bib for his recently born grandson form Houston, TX.
Last Regular Meeting as President for Chris McAlpine
Today was the last regular meeting under Chris McAlpine. To make the moment memorable some of our fine members have upped their game when they pulled a practical joke on Chris. Instead of stealing the gavel or bell they stole his podium. Now you see it, now you don’t! He was happy that this happened on his last meeting as president and not his first! There is always a way to be positive about a situation.
At the end of the meeting, Chris McAlpine said, “Thank you for a delightful year. It is a team effort and thank you to everyone!”
Committee Announcements
Greg Fay, CNO 2.0 Chair, announced that this month’s CNO 2.0 meeting speaker will be Aneesa Bhimani-Trimble from Hannah’s Treasure Chest and it will be held at the Heavier than Air brewing company. Remember the CNO 2.0 meeting is always the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 PM at a local bar or restaurant. Ryan Hawk will be the speaker at the next meeting on October 18, 2018 at Ollie’s.
Greg Fay, CNO 2.0 Chair, also announced that on October 12, 2018 for the last home game of the year for Centerville Elks Football versus Northmont we are having a tailgate party coordinated with the Centerville Quarterbacks club.
Gail Aiken announced the Haunted Trail at Forest Field Park will be held on October 16, 2018 and October 17, 2018. It is about a 1-mile walk and we need more volunteers for trail guides.
Beth Duncan, social committee chair, announced that the next social event will be on October 4th, 2018 at Breakout Games in Centerville with pizza after at Donato’s Pizza. Sign up at a meeting or email Diane Arehart at [email protected].
Beth Duncan and Joe madden announced special tips about the dress code for the Installation Banquet that will be held on September 25, 2018. The following combinations do not go together: nose ring and, Bi-focal glasses, spiked hair and bald spots, pierced tongue and dentures, miniskirts and support hose, ankle bracelets and corn pads, Speedos and cellulite, belly button ring and gall bladder scars, disco shirts and a heart monitor, bikinis and liver spots, short shorts and varicose veins, and inline skates with a walker. The most important thing is DO NOT dress like Don Kelley.
Chris McAlpine announced that the South Metro Optimist club is celebrating their 30th anniversary. We sponsored this club in 1988 and we are invited to their party on October 1, 2018 at 6 pm.
Chris McAlpine stated that Tri-Star Soccer still needs volunteers. The event will be on September 21, 2018, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM. Be sure to invite children aged 4-13 to come and participate in this free event.
Today’s Presentation
Mike Bevis introduced Eric Harmon, the publisher and president of Cincy Company LLC which publishes The Dayton Magazine every other month as well as other community magazines. It is free to subscribe to the magazine, and always has been. He told us stories of his personal and professional life and his thoughts about the Dayton area.
Eric grew up in Cleveland. His parents launched a magazine in the Cleveland area then moved in Houston because of the military. Eric enjoys coaching and playing sports.
Eric said that sometimes the best advice you are given you shouldn’t take. He asked others for advice on whether he should launce a magazine for Dayton and was advised not to, but he did anyway and it has been successful.
Daytonian’s love history, so they try to remember this when producing the magazine. When the magazine was launched, the creators were nervous about the cover. The month it launched was the anniversary of the great Dayton flood. All pictures of the flood are black and white, which was not ideal for the full color magazine. It worked out and ended up being the best launch ever of one of their local magazines. They have Leo Doluca write a history story for every issue.
The most popular zip code for subscribers is Centerville. The office for Dayton Magazine has been at The Entrepreneur Center since they started. They have 10,000 subscribers.
Daytonian’s have a way of candidly speaking at business meetings. Someone told Eric, “Don’t make this an Ad Rag.” He thinks it is great that businesses in Dayton will tell you the truth versus other cities.
Eric does have concerns about the lack of growth in downtown Dayton, however, he also noted that there is a lot of construction of apartments and condominiums. One of the fascinating things about this construction is that the buildings are full upon opening. They are building these dwellings on a needs basis versus investor/developer basis. He thinks that if we improved the Dayton Convention Center it will greatly help economic development in the area. Don’t worry about the past, make things happen now and for the future.
Lastly, Eric encourages CNO to keep going and he has noticed we are very active in the community. He asked if we would please allow Dayton Magazine to tell our Optimist story with other articles that will help the community. You can find links for article or idea submissions here.
