Public speaking is important. Seventy percent of people say it is an essential skill for success. The speakers today are sharing their perspectives on “Healing the World with Optimism.” The winner from each of the 2 days will represent Centerville Noon at the Zone 14 contest, which will be held on Zoom on Wednesday, March 9th, 2021.
Since it was established in 1928, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program sponsored by Optimist International. Our contest is named in honor of former Optimist member Margaret Barclay. She cared deeply about bringing out the best in kids and in living the Optimist Creed. She spent 40 years in public education and retired in 2000 as Principal at Magsig Middle School. While Margaret passed away in 2010, it is a pleasure to see her memory being recognized in this way.
Day two of the Margaret Barclay Memorial Oratorical Contest was held on February 11th. Members were impressed with the poise and courage of the middle-school students who prepared speeches and spoke in front of nearly 100 members. Faith D., Jacob W., Julia O., and Kathryn M. presented their thoughts on the topic “Just iMagine a World without Boundaries.” The parents who came to support the students had the opportunity to learn about the great things the club does for the community.
Today was the first of two Oratorical Contests. Since it was established in 1928, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program sponsored by Optimist International. Our contest is done in collaboration with the Centerville Evening and South Metro Optimist clubs and is named in honor of former CNO member Margaret Barclay. She chaired the Oratorical committee for many years. She cared deeply about bringing out the best in kids and in living the Optimist Creed. She was a most beloved member of our club, a past president, and lived a life dedicated to helping others.
Today we have the second group of participants for the Margaret Barclay Memorial 2019 Optimist Oratorical Contest. Since it was established in 1928, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program sponsored by Optimist International. It is done in collaboration with Centerville Evening and South Metro Optimists, who also sponsor contests.
Contestants deliver a four to five minute speech. One winner from each contest advances to the zone competition and then can advance to the finals at the district level. Districts have the opportunity to provide a first place scholarship of $2,500, a second place scholarship of $1,500, and a third place scholarship of $1,000.
