Erin Dickerson’s Prayer
God,
We look around and see a world in need of kindness. We get so wrapped up in our to-do lists and busyness that we forget what an impact we can have with a simple act of kindness shown to others: a phone call to check in on a friend or neighbor; greeting your cashier or bagger by name; volunteering your time to help someone in need; paying for the person behind you in the drive-thru line; holding the door open for a stranger…the possibilities are endless. Help us to take time to spread kindness one simple act at a time.
Amen.

Happy 70th Birthday Larry Lynde! Tom Beery sang a hilarious rendition of Happy Birthday. The song ends with, “One thing we all agree on is you’ve gone over the hill.”
Artemis Domestic Violence Center, Jane Keiffer
Diane Arehart introduced Jane Keiffer MSW, LISW-S, the Executive Director of Artemis Domestic Violence Center. She received her Masters of Social Work from the University of Kentucky and her undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Toledo.
Jane has been an employee of Artemis Center for the past 27 years, serving as the director for the last 6 years.
She is qualified to serve as an expert witness in the area of domestic violence in court proceedings.
Jane participates on several committees in the community, advancing best practices for working with survivors of domestic violence and their children. Jane currently serves on the Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN) board of directors and the Human Services Priority board.
She provides numerous trainings to the community which includes police officers, prosecutors, victim advocates, and many other professionals on intimate partner violence.
Jane volunteers for Hospice by baking sweet treats for residents.
About Artemis Domestic Violence Center
Artemis Center empowers survivors of domestic violence to make decisions and choices that will establish and maintain safety for themselves and their children. By working collaboratively with other community services, Artemis Center advocates are able to coordinate needed services. Additionally, community education and advocacy programs help to create community best practice responses for survivors of domestic violence.
Since 1985, Artemis Center has made great strides in the community, helping more than 100,000 victims and their children through crisis intervention, safety planning, education, and support. The name, “Artemis Center,” comes from Artemis, the Greek goddess. She is known as the goddess of light and protector of the vulnerable.
Presentation
Artemis provides services to survivors of abuse. Jane noted that it is not a shelter.
You can view the slide deck of the presentation here.
Artemis answers the Montgomery County Domestic Violence Hotline, (937) 461-HELP (4357), 6000 times per year.
On average nationally, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. In total, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been physically abused by an intimate partner.
Artemis Center thrives due to its community partnerships with organizations like Legal Aid, YWCA Dayton, and Ohio Domestic Violence Network.
Domestic Violence Takes on Numerous Forms
- Physical: Direct physical harm and abuse.
- Emotional: Manipulative tactics that undermine self-esteem and emotional well-being.
- Mental/Gaslighting: Psychological manipulation and distortion of reality.
- Sexual: Coercion or assault of a sexual nature.
- Financial: Control or manipulation of finances to exert power.
- Spiritual: Abusive behaviors related to religious or spiritual beliefs.
- Stalking: Unwanted and often dangerous pursuit of the survivor.
- Monitoring and Controlling: Surveillance and controlling behaviors that restrict freedom.
Challenges Faced by Survivors
One of the most often asked questions is why victims don’t just leave the abuser. Leaving an abusive relationship is a complex process, often hindered by factors such as:
- The cost associated with leaving.
- The inherent danger of leaving an abusive partner.
- Emotional ties, including love and hope.
- Responsibilities towards children and pets.
- Self-blame and societal judgment.
- The misconception that leaving guarantees safety.
Even after escaping an abusive situation, survivors may continue to face threats and danger. Research indicates that the three months following separation are among the most dangerous for survivors.
Services and Assistance
Artemis Center is a source of assistance and hope for survivors. Its services encompass:
- Crisis Intervention: Accessible through the Montgomery County Domestic Violence Hotline: (937) 461-HELP (4357).
- Support and Education Groups: Weekly gatherings that include childcare, allowing mothers to participate.
- Therapeutic Services: Providing therapy for children exposed to violence and working with non-offending parents.
- Advocacy and Accompaniment: Guiding survivors through legal proceedings and providing unwavering support.
- Community Partnerships: Collaborating with various organizations, including Legal Aid, CARE House, and YWCA Dayton.
Extending a Helping Hand
Artemis Center goes beyond immediate crises to offer practical support. This includes transportation assistance, safety measures such as lock changes and alarms, and access to essential items through well-stocked pantries for food, hygiene products, and toys.
Equipped Staff and Ongoing Training
With a staff of 21, including 16 in clinical positions, Artemis Center is equipped to provide dedicated support. Staff members undergo ongoing training to ensure they remain well-versed in areas such as trauma-informed care, traumatic brain injury, and more.
How You Can Help
Besides monetary donations, you can contribute to the cause by donating to Artemis’ food pantries, displaying hotline posters, volunteering your time, or participating in educational initiatives aimed at fostering healthy relationships.
