Picnic Lunch at Yankee Park in the Margaret Barclay Shelter

Erin Dickerson’s Prayer

Lord,

Sometimes we feel as though our efforts are but mere drops. What we fail to realize is those drops collect with the drops of others to form puddles of optimism. When we least expect it, a child at heart jumps in creating a splash of rippling drops of optimism to spread around us. Help us to never get discouraged by our mere drops.

Amen.

Picnic Lunch

Today’s meeting was held at Yankee Park in the Margaret Barclay Shelter.

A lot of people helped make this happen.

Beth Duncan Thanked

  • Debe Dockins, Erin Laurito and her cute daughters, Beth Duncan, Joan Cordonnier, and Mary Ann Mackenzie for arranging the picnic that was a tasty and fun event.
  • Cameron Langer arranged catering and delivered box lunches of Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken.
  • Jeff Neace (Owner of Whit’s Frozen Custard) brought everyone a frozen custard.
  • Sue Brubaker brought the flowers to decorate the tables with the flowers from the convention.
  • Debe Dockins coordinated all the people and their jobs.
  • Erin and Andy Dickerson and Erin Laurito secured the table covers to the tables in the wind.
  • Mike Bevis brought tables and coolers with ice and drinks.
  • The Sergeants brought all the name badges.
  • Tom Novak brought an American flag.
  • Kristin Marks reserved the shelter for us at no charge. The CWPD staff hauled away the trash!

  • Anyone else who helped set up or tear down and clean up from the lunch.

Margaret Barclay Shelter at Yankee Park

There is a plaque at the shelter about the dedication of the Shelter in honor of Margaret K. Barclay. It reads:

On this day September28, 2010 this shelter is hereby dedicated to Centerville Noon Optimist Member, Margaret K. Barclay, who has devoted her life to helping the youth of our community as an Educator, a Community Leader and an Optimist.  We celebrate her tireless work ethic, her “can do” attitude and her fighting spirit.

Stump the Club Question

The stump the club question this week was, “What is one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition.”

Beth explained that it was the word “Up.”

Here is what Beth read to us:

This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is UP. It is listed in the dictionary as an adverb, preposition, adjective, noun, or verb.

It’s easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why does the topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election? Why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.

At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: a drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.

We open UP a store in the morning, but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost a quarter of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it does not rain for a while, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I’ll wrap it UP for now….my time is UP! Oh…one more thing: what is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night?

U….P     I

Did that one crack you UP?
