N.O.W. – New Optimists Wanted – Event

New and perspective members learned about volunteer opportunities with our club through these events. Committee chairs presented what each committee does for the club. Note that all CNO community events are free for all participants and their families. The Americana 5K Run is a City of Centerville event that we help run and donate money to and there is a cost to the runners for this event.

Essay Contest Winners Read Their Essays

The Essay Contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective and helps in developing their skills in written expression. This year’s theme for the 2020-21 contest was “Reaching Your Dreams by Choosing Optimism.”

Community Champion Award Presented

Mike Bevis and Judy DeMarco presented the 2021 Community Champion Award winner, Kris Horlacher. Kris is the Executive Director of the Dayton-based nonprofit Shoes for the Shoeless that she founded in 2010. Over 125,000 children have been served. They are a mobile shoe store with 2 trucks. Their mission is, “To provide new, properly fitting gym shoes and socks to local children in need.”

Stephanie Bange – Graphic Novels

The difference between Comic Books and Graphic Novels is that a Graphic Novel has a plot, a story arc, and a resolution. A Comic Book is a serial and only has a couple of chapters of the bigger story in a single issue. Adults read comic books to relax and allow your brain to create and that they are a great way to spend time with kids and grandchildren. “Live long, prosper, and read a graphic novel!”

Oratorical Contest – Week #1

Since it was established in 1928, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program sponsored by Optimist International. Our contest is named in honor of former Optimist member Margaret Barclay. She cared deeply about bringing out the best in kids and in living the Optimist Creed. She spent 40 years in public education and retired in 2000 as Principal at Magsig Middle School. While Margaret passed away in 2010, it is a pleasure to see her memory being recognized in this way.
