Oratorical Contest – Week #2

Erin Dickerson’s Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Sometimes we need to change our perspective.  When we look outside today at a fresh blanket of snow, help us to refrain from dreading the shoveling and plowing, the bitter cold, and higher heating bills.  Instead, help us to admire and appreciate its beauty and the uniqueness of each snowflake, much like we need to admire and appreciate the beauty and uniqueness in each of us.

Amen.

Happy Birthday Louise Haun and Ken Peacock

Today was Louise Haun’s and Ken Peacock’s birthday. Louise was on today’s call. Tim Clemmer led those in attendance on the Zoom meeting. First, we warned the Oratorical participants not to be scared and please stay on the call. Second, we warmed up our voices which didn’t help. Then, we sang loudly, proudly, and badly. Have a great birthday and year Louise and Ken!

Margaret Barclay Memorial 2021 Optimist Oratorical Contest – Day 2

Liz Fultz, the chair of the Margaret Barclay Memorial Oratorical contest, introduced the participating students and described this annual event. Public speaking is important. Seventy percent of people say it is an essential skill for success. This is the 5th year for Liz to chair this event. Liz thanked today’s judges who are Beth Duncan, Kristen Marks and Joellen Ulliman. Tom Novak served as timekeeper.

Liz thanked her co-chair Ron Thompson. Additional thanks to Debe Dockins and Greg Griffin for helping to prepare for this meeting.

Liz thanked educators and administrators who support the contest including the Principals at the Centerville middle schools and Thomas Razaukas and Erin Bade, teachers at Incarnation without whom this contest would not be possible.

The speakers today are sharing their perspectives on “Healing the World with Optimism.”

The winner from each of the 2 days will represent Centerville Noon at the Zone 14 contest, which will be held on Zoon on Wednesday, March 9th, 2021.

About the Oratorical Contest

Since it was established in 1928, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program sponsored by Optimists International.

Our contest is named in honor of former Optimist member Margaret Barclay.   Margaret chaired this committee for many years.  She cared deeply about bringing out the best in kids and in living the Optimist Creed.  She was a most beloved member of our club, a past president and lived a life dedicated to helping others. Margaret’s accomplishments were vast, including 40 years in public education, the last 27 in the Centerville Schools. She retired in 2000 as Principal at Magsig Middle School. While Margaret passed away in 2010, it is a pleasure to see her memory being recognized in this way.

Mr. Roy Barclay, husband of Margaret, supports the Oratorical contest by making an annual donation.  Thank you, Roy, for your ongoing contributions and support of this contest.
