If You have the time.
My time is eternity.
What surprises You most about humankind?
They get bored with childhood. They grow up and then long to be a
child again. They lose their health in search of riches and lose their
riches to restore their health. That thinking only about the future, they
forget the present. That they live as if they will never die and die as if
they never lived. To learn that they cannot make any one love them.
To learn that it only takes a second to destroy a person we love and
years to repair it.
As a parent, what life lessons do You want them to learn?
That it is not good to compare themselves to others. To learn that a
Rich person doesn’t have the most. They want the least!
To learn that two people can see the same thing and see it differently.
To learn to forgive others but learn to forgive themselves.
Is there anything else You want them to know?

Special Announcement

There will be no lunch meeting on 12/10/2019. That evening is the Holiday Party.

We will have our regularly scheduled lunch on 12/17/2019. This will be the last meeting of 2019.

There will be no meetings on 12/24/2019 and 12/31/2019. Please enjoy your holiday traditions with your families. We will gather again for our first lunch meeting of 2020 on 1/7/2019.

Announcements

Nancy Lehren announced that there will be two Build-a-Bear events for the USO at WPAFB on December 7, 2019. In addition to volunteers, she needs drivers with easy access credentials to get on the base.

Donna Huss announced that on December 7 from 9:30 to 11:30 in the morning at the St. Leonard center, the St. Leonard Optimist Club will be making blankets. Let her know if you would like to help. If you come, please bring a good pair of scissors to use to cut the thick material.

The Other Side of Christmas, by Beth Gully

Jean Pummill introduced author and graphics artist Beth Gully, the author of “The Other Side of Christmas” and “The Other Side of Easter”. She is known as the upside-down book speaker. Beth is one of 100 ambigram artists in the world. She has created over 400 logos, has set marketing trends and has won many prestigious awards for her creations.

She started by asking us if we knew what an ambigram was. She showed us what an ambigram was by creating two drawings during our meeting on 2’ x 3’ poster boards on the easels.

First, she drew a picture of Santa Clause on the first board. Then she turned it 180 degrees and it was a picture of Jesus.

Second, she wrote out the word Santa in stylized cursive and turned it 180 degrees and it said Jesus.

You can read about ambigrams on Wikipedia. From Wikipedia, “An ambigram is a word, art form or other symbolic representation whose elements retain meaning when viewed or interpreted from a different direction, perspective, or orientation.”

She read to us her first book, “The Other Side of Christmas”. The book is a Christmas story of the children of a family waiting for Santa and of Santa putting his checklist together. It follows the kid’s imagination of Santa heading their way.

After finishing the Santa Clause story, Beth turned the book upside down and read a different story with the same pictures in reverse order. The second story in the book is now of the travels of Mary and Joseph and the story of Jesus being born on the first Christmas Day. The angels instructed the shepherds to share the good news with the world. It told of King Herod’s defeat. The three wise men were at the end.

Each page of the book had an illustration, and each was an ambigram.

The book took 8 years to finish. She discussed why it took so many years to finish her first book. She said, “If you have a job and you don’t have a deadline, it is hard to get it done.” To get her over the procrastination, she committed to working on the project at least some each day, even if for just 3 minutes. Some days it would be just 3 minutes and others it would be longer. Staying connected with a project made it seem like the task was less daunting.

Soon after finishing her first book in 2014, she was asked to do an Easter story. It, too, has taken quite a while to finish. The book cover is a drawing of an Easter Bunny and when flipped over it is a picture of Jesus.

She discussed how she learned to draw ambigrams. As a Graphics Designer, she makes sure every line and shape in a logo have meaning. This skill made it possible for her to see how to draw an ambigram.

For the past 30 years Gully has created a new ambigram Christmas card each year.

Besides creating Christmas cards, books and being a graphics designer, she is developing church curriculums for the 4 weeks of Advent and the 6 weeks of Lent.

She also teaches kids how to create ambigrams.
