Phather Phil’s Prayer

Heavenly Father when we first started saying our prayers we viewed it
as a duty. I’m sure I’m not alone in this practice. We remember
starting every prayer – “Now I lay me down to sleep.” Growing older
we started with asking for some help. Gradually we realized that
beginning with thanks gave us the most pleasure. Now it’s a
conversation with You, going over the days joys and the problems we
encountered and asking for Your guidance. Thank You Lord for Your
patience with us and helping us grow closer to You. I’m sure that
growing closer to You has given us our Optimism and the desire to
give back. Thanks again Lord. Amen!

Donations for Trotwood School Uniforms

Lisa Tucker, co-owner of Bill’s Donuts, accepted numerous individual donations today from our members on behalf of school uniforms for Trotwood. The district was hit hard by the Memorial Day tornados. CNO made a monetary contribution as well. Bill’s Donuts is very supportive of causes in our area and of CNO.

Top Ten Reasons to Attend the Ohio Convention

Cherie Gentry announced that the Great Ohio Optimist District Convention will be August 15-17, 2019 in Fairborn (just a short drive from Centerville!). She encourages all of us to sign up. Our club covers your fees to attend. If you can only come one day, the best day is Saturday, August 17. Please support the incoming governor (Myron Rheaume) by attending.

The top ten reasons to attend are:

  1. Opportunity to meet, be inspired by and trained by incoming Optimist International President Adrian Elcock.
  2. Incredible training for President-Elects, Secretary/Treasurer-Elects, Lt. Governor-Elects as well non-officer Optimists.
  3. Obtain new fundraising & project ideas for your club. Share your club activities with fellow Optimists.
  4. Win one of the $25 gift cards being given away as attendance prizes.
  5. Renew old friendships as well as make new optimist friends from all over The Great Ohio District.
  6. See the fantastic Great Ohio Optimist District JOI students in action.
  7. Be inspired to add new members to your club in order to serve more youth in your community.
  8. Celebrate The Great Ohio Optimist District’s success in the “Imagine the Power of You” year.
  9. Get motivated to help Governor-Elect Myron Rheaume lead us to greater achievements in 2019-20.
  10. Enjoy the fun & fellowship of the 72th Annual Convention of the Great Ohio District.

Committee Announcements

Donna Huss announced that the Ohio District Convention will be held in Fairborn from August 15-17, 2019. Our JOI club is requesting donations of school supplies to be given to Choices, Inc., which is a foster care program, serving 16 Ohio counties. Please bring your donations to lunch and Evelyn Griffin will collect the items.

Bob Lawson announced that Kids Day in the Park will be Saturday August 3rd, 2019. Please volunteer if you can. Instead of handing out the helium balloons we normally do new member Jerry Gerards will be making balloon animals. If you volunteer that day, you can get some training to make them.

Barbara Santo announced that the next Build-a-Bear will be Saturday August 3rd, 2019. More volunteers are needed for this very popular event. We did not get to pick the date of this event and it is unfortunate it is the same day as Kids Day in the Park. It is in conjunction with the Sickle Cell Annual Education Day. We need volunteers to show up at 1:30 PM at The Kroc Center, 1000 N Keowee St, Dayton OH. Volunteers are needed for several options: help children dress their bear, help with games, hand out bags or Nancy will find you a job!

Beth Duncan announced that Vida won the Euchre tournament last Friday.

Meet New Club Members

Instead of the usual guest speaker today, we used the time to get to know two of our newest members. We had two recently inducted members come up to the podium and share a little about themselves.

Michelle Tagliamonte

Michelle was inducted into CNO on July 16, 2019.

Before moving to Centerville, she and her family lived In Illinois. In Illinois she was a member of the board for CASA for Children. CASA is a national organization of advocates that have been standing up for children since 1977. When she heard about Centerville Noon Optimist and what we do she instantly wanted to join.

Her family was happy to leave Illinois and return to Centerville.

Professionally she enjoys helping people take control of their health through diet.

Dylan Melling

Dylan Melling was inducted into CNO on July 23, 2019.

Dylan is the District Direct at Miami Valley Council of Boy Scouts of America.

He has been involved in scouts since grade school when he heard about all the cool things scouts get to use like bows and arrows, BB guns and fire. Dylan’s father has early onset dementia at the age of 56, and Dylan is grateful for the great memories of his father being his scout leader.

Dylan graduated with a class of 81 students from Frankton, Indiana.

He met his wife in Layfayette, Indiana. Their daughter, Sophia, was born 6 weeks early in mid-July, 2019 and she is doing well in the NICU in a hospital in Indianapolis.

Dylan said he will cherish the feeling of holding his little girl for the first for the rest of his life. He looks forward to when his daughter can join scouts.

Getting the word out about scouts to grade schoolers was traditionally through promotional flyers sent home from schools. Centerville has stopped sending flyers home. He has started using social media and geo fencing tools to advertise to potential new scouts.
