Heavenly Father, we all have been blessed beyond measure. Of all our blessings friends are our most cherished. They have divided our troubles, multiplied our joys and best of all – like us just the way we are. It is true Lord, when we count our blessings, we find we have enough. Thank you, Lord, and may all friends be blessed as they have been a blessing to others.

Congratulations Centerville HS Elks Basketball team
The Centerville Elks won the school’s first-ever Division 1 State Basketball Championship defeating Westerville Central 43-42 on March 22, 2021.
Announcements
Mike Bevis, golf committee, announced they are looking for volunteers for the day of the event. They would appreciate donations of items for the silent auction and goody bags. Gift cards make great donations.

- 4/14/2021, 6 PM, Tom Frazier Tee Off for Youth Golf 2021, Zoom hosted by Mike Bevis. Meetings in 2021 will be on Wednesdays on 1/13, 2/17, 3/24, 4/14, 5/12, 6/16, 7/7. Additional volunteers are always welcome. The golf outing will be held on 7/12/2021.

Today was Andy Higgins’ birthday. Debe Dockins led our mess of a rendition of Happy Birthday. Debe did not make us sound any better, but nobody could…nobody! And that is just the way we like it!

Larry Hansgen, The Voice of the University of Dayton Flyers
Carolyn Taylor introduced Larry Hansgen, the WHIO Radio host of Miami Valley’s Morning News since 2003. Hansgen is celebrating 40 years at WHIO Radio 1290 AM and 95.7 FM. He joined the staff of WHIO in 1981 as an overnight board operator and quickly rose through the ranks. He became the Sports Director that year and in 1982 became the play-by-play voice of the University of Dayton Flyers basketball.
Book: Bigger than Basketball
His 2020 book, “Bigger Than Basketball: The Dayton Flyers’ Greatest Season” is available around town and online. He said that sales have been good. Locally it is available at UD Arena, Ashley’s Pastries, Dot’s Market in Bellbrook and other places. Synopsis: The Dayton Flyers were 2020 outright A-10 Champs, were heading to Brooklyn as the number one seed in the A-10 Championship and were projected to be a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament. In less than a week it was all gone—the Flyers’ post-season dreams a casualty of the coronavirus pandemic that soon held the entire world in its grip.
The emotion the 2019-20 team members used most often to describe the cancellation of the 2020 tournament is “grateful”. The 2019-20 season was still UD’s greatest season even though there was no tournament. Larry thought the UD season deserved a book and that is why he wrote one.
Hansgen’s 40 Years (and counting) at WHIO
He said that reaching 40 years with a single employer has as much to do with the employer as with the employee. WHIO is a great place to work. During his time at WHIO, the ownership has only changed once and that was very recently. The culture has remained the same. It is also difficult for any businesses to be around for 40 years. Businesses shut down, are absorbed or have a change in ownership that sours the culture all the time.
For his 40 year and counting career, Hansgen thanked his listeners, WHIO, and the community for making his career possible.
With a 40-year career, people are going to ask you for advice. For kids starting their career he tells them to show up for work on time. At WHIO he started at an entry level as a radio board operator. His shifts were Tuesday through Friday from 11 PM to 5 AM. His duties included waking up the person following his shift. He would start calling him around 2 AM and he was lucky if he showed up by 6 AM so Larry had to work an extra hour. Management noticed this and after just two weeks on the job Larry was promoted to the better morning slot from the nightshift. He tells kids if you want a 40-year career the best advice is to show up on time because someone will notice.
2019-20 UD Flyers
The COVID pandemic turned the sports world upside down. One of things most affected in sports was the outcome of the 2019-2020 UD Flyer men’s basketball team. People ask themselves, “What if the 2020 tournament had not been cancelled?”
In March 2021 within 24 hours, they went from learning the A10 would not have any fans in the seats, to the A10 tournament was cancelled, then the first four was cancelled and finally that the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament was cancelled. Hansgen described the experience like falling down steps and seeing it all in slow motion.
Last year’s UD team was great with a record of 29 wins and 2 losses. That record makes it sound like they just had an easy time of it. That is not the case. The team had to use extreme effort for every game. This was made more challenging as the team was also healing from the 2019 tragedies of the Oregon District mass shooting and the Memorial Day Tornadoes.

Larry congratulated CNO on the fact that we are truly a service organization not just one where everyone is looking for business.
Myron Rheaume (nicknamed Lazarus by Larry Hansgen) led us in singing “Happy Anniversary” (to the tune of Happy Birthday) to celebrate Larry’s 40 years at WHIO.
This is the second time Larry has been the CNO guest speaker on Zoom. He is sure that Zoom will be around after the pandemic, but he looks forward to doing his next presentation to CNO in person.
