Erin Dickerson’s Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Sometimes we feel it would benefit us to be like a pier, standing strong, being self-reliant, depending only on ourselves, but that would leave us alone, unconnected, and going nowhere. Help us instead to be like a bridge, connecting to others, aiding their journey, and traveling alongside them, even if only for a brief moment in time.
Amen.
Committee Meetings
- 3/17/2021, 6 PM, Tom Frazier Tee Off for Youth Golf 2021, Zoom hosted by Mike Bevis. Meetings in 2021 will be on Wednesdays on 1/13, 2/17, 3/17, 4/14, 5/12, 6/16, 7/7. Additional volunteers are always welcome. The golf outing will be held on 7/12/2021.

Community Events
Greg Griffin announced that the Easter Egg Drive through will be held on April 3rd, 2021.
Visual Arts Contest chairs Deb Saunders and Jane Fiehrer have sent out the invitation to art teachers at local schools so they can invite their students to participate.
Beth Duncan, chair of Centerville’s Got Talent, said she needs more volunteers to help with this committee. The contest will be for kids ages 4-19 that live or go to school in Centerville or Washington Township and will be participating in the event via videos they create of their talent. They recently had their first meeting, but they still would like more volunteers.
Social Events
Sue Jesse and Sarah Umbreit, Social Committee, announced the winners of the “Name that Baby” contest, held last Friday. They each received credits to Optigear from Lizard Apparel. Val Huff (most guessed right, $50), Debe Dockins (most interesting facts, $30), Charla Rheaume (cutest baby pic, $30), Carolyn Taylor (baby pic looks most like today, $30).
Stephanie Bange, Graphic Novels
Mary Ann MacKenzie introduced Stephanie Bange. Stephanie has always been a reader, often riding her bike or taking a bus to the base library when growing up. She cut her teeth on Classics Illustrated, Archie Comics and DC Comics, spending her weekly allowance to read the latest issues of her favorite comic books. She continues to read comic books today, although now they are referred to as graphic novels.
Stephanie received her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Louisiana State University and worked in all types of libraries – school, public, military/special and academic – over her 38 years in the field, retiring as Director of the Educational Resource Center at Wright State University in 2017.
She now serves as a children’s literature consultant and recently worked with Mark Siegel, an award-winning graphic novel/author/illustrator and the founder, editor and publisher of First/Second Books (graphic novels).

Stephanie discussed Comic Books and Graphic Novels for Adults.
The difference between Comic Books and Graphic Novels is that a Graphic Novel has a plot, a story arc and a resolution. A Comic Book is a serial and only has a couple of chapters of the bigger story in a single issue. They are binding some comic books into a complete story as Graphic Novels.
She said that adults read comic books to relax and allow your brain to create and that they are a great way to spend time with your kids and grandchildren. Note that many comics and graphic novels are not meant for children. There are multiple levels of appropriate materials by age groups.
The two major publishers are Marvel and DC, but there are dozens of other independent publishers. It is a big business. There are 528 Million in sales form comic bookstores alone.
Stephanie has a PDF with lots of links and information including the major publishers and lots of recommendations. Stephanie said that Ohio libraries have many of these titles and to check out “Search Ohio” if your local library does not have what you want. The Washington Township-Centerville Public library is part of “Search Ohio” and has a very large local collection of comics and graphic novels available.

Any member of any type of Centerville Noon Optimist can attend Zoom meetings. CNO 2.0, St Leonard’s and CNO full members or CNO monthly members can ALL attend.
