Erin Dickerson’s Prayer
Miracles happen every day, change your perception of what a miracle is and you’ll see them all around you. – Jon Bon Jovi
Lord,
We read the news, listen to the radio, or scroll through social media and see negativity. Help us to change our perspective and witness the miracles surrounding us every day. A flower growing through a crack in the sidewalk, the stars in the sky, the strangers we meet, the helping hands we give and receive. There are miracles abound. Let us rejoice in them.
Amen.

Joan Cordonnier announced that Julie Walling Noeth, a longtime CNO member and professional photographer, will offer free business headshots before and after the meeting on August 27, 2024. These photos are yours to use as you wish at no cost and would work well as a headshot for the member handbook. A big thank you to Julie for this generous offer!

Scouting Mission
Scouting prepares young people to make moral and ethical decisions over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.
Scout Law
A Scout is: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.
Scouting Oath
On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
Scouting Key Values
- Character: Scouting aims to build character by teaching Scouts to live by the Scout Oath and Law.
- Leadership: Scouts are encouraged to develop leadership skills through various activities and responsibilities.
- Service: Serving others and the community is a central tenet of Scouting.

Transition to Scouting America
The Boy Scouts of America is transitioning to a new name: Scouting America. This change, set to be completed by February 2024, addresses the low recognition of the Boy Scouts logo and aims to reintroduce the organization to the community with a fresh identity. Importantly, while the name is changing, the core programs and values remain the same. Scouting America will continue to operate gender-specific troops, with separate units for boys and girls. In the Miami Valley, nearly 20% of scouts are female, and last year, 19 young women earned the rank of Eagle Scout, meeting the same rigorous standards as their male counterparts.
Gem City Scouting
Jeff also highlighted the Gem City Scouting program, which serves over 200 youth who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in traditional Scouting. This initiative brings Scouting directly into schools and community centers, offering experiences that some of these young people have never had before, such as camping in tents and exploring the outdoors.
Cricket Holler Scout Camp
Cricket Holler Scout Camp, a 169-acre property in Butler Township, is undergoing significant renovations to modernize its facilities and ensure it meets the needs of scouts today and in the future. The camp is a popular destination for troops from across Ohio and the United States, who often pair their camping experience with visits to the nearby Air Force Museum.
The master plan for the camp focuses on three key experiences: outdoor adventures, leadership development, and skill acquisition. Current projects include updating campsites with modern amenities, building new shower facilities, and enhancing educational areas. The renovations are being phased in, with Phase 1 focusing on campsites and heritage areas and Phase 2 on the heart of the camp.
How You Can Help
There are several ways to support Scouting in our community:
- Become a Merit Badge counselor
- Participate in a ‘Cricket Cares’ Day
- Consider making a donation or including Scouting in your estate planning
Jeff emphasized the importance of community support in ensuring Scouting continues to thrive in the Miami Valley. For more information, visit Miami Valley Council or contact Jeff directly at mailto:[email protected].
Jeff said thank you to all who have supported Scouting and continue to make a difference in the lives of our youth!
