Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Mike Watkins

Erin Dickerson’s Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Your son taught us the Parable of the Mustard Seed. How something so small can grow into something big, become invasive, and take over. It is more important now than ever for us to plant and spread the seeds of optimism wherever we go. Help us to brighten the lives of all those we encounter and make the world a better place one seed at a time.

Amen.

About Sleep in Heavenly Peace

Sleep in Heavenly Peace was founded 13 years ago by Luke and Heidi Mickelson, who recognized the need for beds for children in his community. He started building beds and delivering them to those in need. In 2018, Mike Rowe featured SHP on his show “Returning the Favor,” which inspired Mike Watkins and his wife to receive training and start their own chapter of SHP. They are a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization.

SHP has grown to over 300 chapters nationwide, with two in Canada and one in Jamaica. In Butler County alone, SHP has delivered over 2,500 beds, with another 150 kids on the waiting list. Nationally, SHP has built over 150,000 beds to date and receives bed requests almost every day, largely through social media.

SHP’s mission is to help children in need sleep better, as they believe that a bed is a basic need for proper physical, emotional, and mental support. SHP serves children aged 3-17, with a focus on single moms (60%) and grandparents who suddenly find themselves caring for children. The bed design is set, and no customization is done because of insurance. SHP uses brand new mattresses and referrals come from social services, school liaisons, and word of mouth. Requests can also be made on their website.

Motto

No kid sleeps on the floor in our town!

Build Days – Costs and Details

SHP’s sponsored Build Days provide most of the funding for the organization. They provide both the money and the labor and, in just 3-4 hours, they have built as many as 140 beds, with an average of 50-60 beds per Build Day. Sponsors include Kohls, Lowe’s, and Rotary, with Lowe’s being the largest donor, providing over $1 million per year. The cost is $200-$250 per bed, with the mattresses costing $85. Most of the wood for the beds comes from Lowe’s and orders are placed in bulk to lower delivery costs.

Getting Involved

Those interested in getting involved with SHP can participate in Build Days, which do not require any tools, as everything is provided. Build Days require about 3,000 to 4,000 square feet of space and sometimes they build outside in nice weather. Build Day locations include school and church gyms, as well as store warehouses. Erin Laurito, a member of the Centerville Noon Optimist Club, shared that she participated in a Build Day and found it to be a moving experience.
