Nick Tarkany – Heavier Than Air Brewing Co.

Nick told us the story of his journey to open his beer brewing company and tap room. Opening a brewery is not for the faint of heart. He got into it by accident when his college age son wanted to brew beer. The process made a complete mess of the household stove, but they kept trying. Friends and local business owners like Doubledays wanted him to brew larger quantities and sell it.

TEDxDayton

Today’s speakers are both founding members of TEDxDayton, formed 7 years ago. TED created TEDx as a program of local, self-organized events that brings people together to share a TED-like experience. Diane Farrell is the Director of External Relations and Development for the Dayton Metro Library. Previously she was the Vice President of External Relations at the Dayton Society of Natural History. Ron Rollins is the Content Director of Community Engagement and Associate Editor at the Cox Media Group of Ohio. He oversees the Ideas and Voices pages for The Dayton Daily News, the Springfield News-Sun, the Middletown Journal and the Hamilton Journal-News.

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery has a variety of programs available for children of all ages, as well as for general visitors to the museum. Starting in 1893 as an annex in the Dayton Metro Library, expanding to the first standalone building in 1953 as the Dayton Museum of Natural History, and then continuing to grow onto DeWeese Parkway and becoming the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in the 1990’s, the Museum’s collections have soared to approximately 1.8 million items, and continue to grow.

Library Grants and Scholarships Awarded

CHS partnered with our club to find students who have a desire and a financial need to pursue a degree in the skilled trades to present them with the Skilled Trades Scholarships. Skilled trades are in high demand and this is a wonderful opportunity for a good job, to earn good money, and have a great future. The Will Cale Scholarship requires a Counselor’s recommendation and the emphasis for selection is on financial need and potential rather than academics or class standing. The goal is for the recipient to graduate from Sinclair with an Associate Degree.

Jenell Ross – President, Bob Ross Auto Group

Jenell is a graduate of Emory University and a trustee at U.D. She is a chairperson for the Federal Reserve in Cincinnati. After her mother’s death from breast cancer, she and her daughters started the Norma J. Ross Memorial Foundation funding programs that raise breast cancer awareness, provide patient aid and research, and support local youth education. The slogan “Pink Ribbon Driven” is also the name of their website.

Jack Blosser – Fort Ancient

Fort Ancient is Ohio’s first State Park. The mission of the Dayton Society of Natural History at Fort Ancient is to provide visitor and educational services focused on archaeology, Native American culture, and heritage stewardship as they relate to the site, on behalf of the Ohio History Connection. The walls and mounds of Fort Ancient were built 2000 years ago by dumping baskets loaded with soil upon one another. There are 553,000 cubic yards of soil. This soil would fill enough dump trucks to stretch 200 miles.

Sheriff Rob Streck – Identity Theft and Scams

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office regional dispatch center took over 2400 calls last year involving financial scams. Over half of scam victims are over 70 years old. Financial scams are also called “Senior Scams.” There is a difference between Immoral and Illegal scams. About 2/3 of elder fraud cases fall outside of being considered criminal activity. Annually there are over #39 billion in losses.

Judge Kennedy came to speak to us tonight about The Ohio Judicial System and how it impacts your life. She handed out her booklet “The Ohio Judicial System & You.” Part of the checks and balances of power in the U.S. and Ohio is the judicial system. Eric Van Vlyman – Alzheimer’s Association

Gary Smiga introduced the Education Assistance Award recipient Tonja Kaissieh who couldn’t make it 2 weeks ago because she was visiting Ohio State University. Tonja brought her mother Jamie, her father JOhnny, her sister Daniela, and her grandfather Joseph Kaissieh who is visiting from Israel. Tonja is attending CHS and is ranked 31st in a senior class of 647 students with a GPA of 4.5432.
