Erin Dickerson’s Prayer

We are likely all familiar with Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God”, yet we fail to live out this scripture in our lives. We are a people constantly on the go, overloaded with responsibilities, wanting to be in control, and carrying the weight of our troubles with us.

Lord,

Help us to remember you are God, we are not.  You are in control, we are not.  Even you paused and took a day of rest.  May we take time to be still, to let you help carry the weight we have placed upon our shoulders and allow you to guide us.

Amen.

Thank You President Gary Hansen

Today was Gary Hansen’s last regular lunch meeting of CNO as President. Gary, you have been a great leader of our club and we appreciate everything you have done for our community and club!

Announcements

  • Chris McAlpine announced that Tri-Star Soccer will be held on Friday September 30, 2022, at 6 PM. Volunteers should arrive at 5:15 PM. They need a lot of volunteers to do registrations and scoring. No knowledge of soccer is needed and you won’t be running around. Kids from CHS will be there to help run the soccer activity stations.  You can register online here.
  • Gail Aiken announced that Haunted Trail is on October 11 and October 12. They need lots of volunteers for trail guides, to hand out donut holes and other tasks that don’t require walking the trail. You can register online here.

CHS Spirit Chain

CHS students were guests at today’s lunch. They requested donations for their annual Spirit Chain fundraising for a community gift. Those at lunch today donated $906 in cash. The CNO board matches this each year, and it was rounded up to $1000 for a total of $1906 for Spirit Chain. The money raised this year will be given to TJ’s Place of Hope (Hope Beyond Addiction) located across from the High School, House of Bread, and The Battle Buddy Foundation. Another $1000 was awarded as an investment at the last board meeting for the new Spirit Fest event that will be held at the High School. Those funds will be used by the students to buy equipment and supplies that they believe will bring in an additional $5000 in funds from the community for their cause each year.

Dayton Children’s Hospital Donation

In August, CNO hosted the 30th annual Tom Frazier Tee Off for Youth Golf Classic. Adam Blanchard, the Director of Donor Engagement from Dayton Children’s Hospital, was presented a check today for $14,000. The money each year is used for the “Traveler’s” fund that supports families of patients with their travel and other expenses while their children are being treated. This has been a 20-year partnership with Dayton Children’s Hospital.

Dayton’s Natural History Museum

Krieg explained that Dayton’s Natural History Museum has existed since September 15, 1893 and they curate 1.8 million objects. It has been renamed many times and many incorrectly believe it was replaced by the Boonshoft Children’s Museum. DSNH is the parent organization of the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery and its sister organization, SunWatch Indian Village (a museum of the area’s 12th century Fort Ancient Native Americans).

As an archaeologist. Krieg is active in excavations at Sunwatch and was there this week working.

Beiser Room of Wonders

Krieg has worked on this room for three years and it just opened. Displayed items will rotate every quarter.

From their website:

Bieser Room of Wonders: Is now open to the Public. A complete transformation of the Bieser Discovery Center has been completed on the first floor of the museum. The final step in a multi-year project to better display more artifacts from our 1.8 million object collection. It is a family friendly learning environment, with an emphasis on discovery. In this space you are able to see some of our impressive collection like never before, taking a deeper look at our history and learn why natural history museums are so important to current and future generations.

Dayton Has a Human Mummy

A 2700-year-old female human mummy from Ancient Egypt is in their collection and you can see it. Nesiur was added to the collection in the 1920’s. They know that she had a tumor and arthritis. She was only 18-22 years old when she died. The arthritis indicates she had a very physical job.

The less you touch an artifact the better. To learn more about the mummy they had a CT scan done at Dayton Children’s Hospital. They then sent the scans for processing and you can see these results at the museum. There is an interactive touch screen that allows you to see her coffin, her wrappings, and her skeleton.

Thank You

Thank you, Jill E. Krieg, for informing us about the Dayton Society of Natural History.
