CNO 2.0 Venue and Details

The venue for tonight’s CNO 2.0 meeting was Nelly’s Taste of Bolivia at 79 S. Main St Centerville, Ohio. Thank you to the owner of Nelly’s, Rafael Santillan, and his fine team for the great food and the space.

Greg Fay, chair of CNO 2.0, said he was so thankful for all the guests and members that came to tonight’s meeting. He also gave a recap of what our club is all about and that information is at the bottom of this article.

RecPlex, Mark Metzger

Greg Fay introduced Mark Metzger, the Recreation Director of the Washington Township RecPlex since 2016. Before becoming the Recreation Director, he worked several years at the Washington Township Town Hall Theatre. Jesse Lightle asked him to be the Recreation Director. She told him just think of all the good you can do for the Town Hall Theatre as the Recreation Director of RecPlex.

The RecPlex was renamed from the Washington Township Recreation Center a few years ago. The new name reflects the additional services it offers the community.

Mark Metzger started off by saying that he loves that CNO is such a fun group that truly likes to volunteer.

Town Hall Renovation

The entire Town Hall Theatre is being renovated. They want to go beyond entertainment just for children. Originally and for decades, the building hosted entertainment for adults. They want to add concerts, movies, and live entertainment in addition to shows for children.

There will be a grand opening concert once the renovations are complete.

He thanked CNO for its recent $20,000 donation for the renovation of Town Hall Theatre. The first two rows of seats of the auditorium will be named in honor of the Centerville Noon Optimist Club as generations of young people continue to enjoy and benefit from the arts in our community for years to come.

Creativity Commons

Creativity Commons Powered by Washington-Centerville Public Library is in a space at the RecPlex. Read a recent CNOtes article about this wonderful makerspace.

Library Director and CNO member Liz Fultz came to Mark Metzger with an idea of letting the library use some space at the RecPlex. The makerspace was opened in 2022 in the old childcare area across from the main gym. The makerspace is already a huge success.

The library website has lots of details on what they have and when they are open. You can also reserve time on the machines and register for classes to learn how to use the machines.

Fitness Center Expansion

Since things started opening after COVID, the use of the fitness center at RecPlex exploded. They need a lot more space for fitness. They have received proposals for combining the original fitness center, the small gym, and the climbing wall area into a large fitness center. There will be a new entrance for the fitness center that will help when there are swim meets on the other site of the building. Instead of closing the rest of the building during meets, they will be able to check people in and close off the fitness side of the building from the pool side. The renovations should be done in 2023. They don’t know for sure when it will be done because of supply chain issues; Mark mentioned issues getting windows in particular.

Park Master Plan

Mark Metzger is working with Park Director and CNO member Kristen Marks. He said that CNO events at parks are a large part of the reason there is a Master plan to improve the park behind RecPlex and other community parks. The annual CNO Fishing Derby is very popular.

Part of the RecPlex park plan is to improve the ponds. This will be very expensive and they have received and are working on obtaining additional grants. He is working with Cynthia Fraley, who is awesome at writing grants. They have received federal grants to clean up the back pond and secured a “Clean Ohio” grant for $400,000.00.

Thank You Mark Metzger

Thank you, Mark Metzger, for speaking at tonight’s CNO 2.0 meeting and updating us about what is happening at the RecPlex.
