Memorial Educational Assistance Awards 2023

Gary Smiga presented the 2023 awards and the renewals from last year. This year there were five first-year winners and five renewals.
Annually, the Noon Optimist Club of Centerville recognizes outstanding youth with Memorial Education Assistance Awards given in memory of the club members who have passed away while active members. Recipients must be a graduating high school senior attending a college or university, be a resident of Centerville or Washington Township, have a strong record of participation in community service activities and possess a financial need. Applicants also write an essay which is used to select the winners.

Hope Squad, Brian Cunningham

Hope Squad is a school-based, peer-to-peer suicide prevention program that deploys trained students to do intentional outreach with distressed peers. The goal is providing friendship, encouragement, and support for students in their school who may be struggling. Hope Squad spreads HOPE and brings awareness to their school and community about mental health in addition to suicide prevention fundamentals, self-care, and anti-bullying.

Sons of the American Revolution and Member Guessing Game

Sons of the American Revolution (Richard Montgomery Chapter of Dayton, Ohio) came to today’s lunch to honor our Avenue of Flags program. They presented CNO with a Certificate of Commendation for the Avenue of Flags program. Afterwards President Beth Duncan had a clever idea to help us get to know each other better while having some fun.

Bringing Out the Best in Kids Award 2023, Arleen Petty

Arleen Petty is this year’s recipient. She is the school counselor at Hadley E. Watts Middle School in Centerville City Schools. The award honors adults who work, or have worked, in the field of education. They will have a minimum of ten years involvement in community service with youth in the Centerville-Washington Township community.

John P. Kalaman Respect for Law Awards 2023

Every year one award is selected for the City of Centerville Police Department and one award is selected for the Washington Township Substation of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Nominations are accepted from the peers of those eligible. All employees of the department are eligible, not just police officers.

The Wall That Heals and AOF Kickoff

The Wall that Heals is a traveling three-quarter size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. It is also a mobile education center and is a program of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (founders of the wall). The exhibit opens on July 27, 2023. The Avenue of Flags committee had its annual kickoff meeting and put on a hilarious skit.
