Phather Phill’s Prayer

Heavenly Father: we all need to have a quiet time every day to be with You. A time to enjoy communicating with You and emptying ourselves of all our concerns. We realize we are blessed. Not as rich as we would like
to be, but not as poor as many. There are more with problems than we think we have and even more that have no solution. Thank You again for us being Optimist; helping youth with consistent love and fellowship. Help
us help everyone by following our Creed, especially to be too strong for lies, too noble for gossip, too strong for the devil and too confused to recognize trouble. Amen!

Special Presentation

Dan Beck had a special presentation for Phather Phil. Phil Robinson has been writing and saying our prayers for over 25 years. For several years now, he has used his iPad to help him write these beautiful and funny prayers. Recently, his iPad broke, so we presented him a new inscribed iPad so he can type his prayers again.

Committee Announcements

Bob Burkman asked members to please sign up for the Big Back Yard Party. This event has combined the Centerville Washington Day in the Park with the National Hunting and Fishing Day. We need volunteers on September 15, 2018. between 1 and 4. You would be signing up for 2-hour shifts.

Greg Griffin, co-chair of the Christmas Tree Lot fundraiser, announced work for the tree lot has started to ramp up. He and Karl Frydryk are the chairs this year. There is another shortage of trees this year, but our suppliers are able to fill our truck order.

Beth Duncan, social chair, stated the annual Installation Dinner is on September 25, 2018 at 6 PM at  Canopy Creek Farm and the cost is $35 per person. There will not be a lunch served that day at Yankee Trace.

Chris McAlpine announced Tri-Star Soccer will be on Friday 9/21/2018 at 5 PM until 7:30 PM at the Rec Center. He still needs volunteers.

Happy Birthday Bob Collins

Today was Bob Collins’ actual birthday. Charlie Tapp led us in another installment of our talentless singing of Happy Birthday, that both makes you smile and brings a tiny tear. My ears still hurt, plus it is stuck in my head.

Today’s Speaker

Beth Duncan introduced today’s speaker, Pamela Jacques, MS, CPW, CHES. Pamela Jacques serves as the Executive Director of the Epilepsy Foundation Ohio.  She believes epilepsy is now in the same place cancer was 25 years ago- a secret no one wants to share, but with strategic communications and programming, that can change. People will realize it is not uncommon and it is not a secret to be hidden away.

Pam received a BA in Communications from Wright State University and a MS in Health Services from California College for Health Sciences.  She is a certified heath education specialist and in professional writing.  Before coming to the Epilepsy Foundation, she spent 21 years at Premier Health, 9 as the Executive Director of Premier Community Health, a subsidiary of Premier Health.

She specializes in disease self-management education and health communications, winning numerous national and state health communication awards.

The New Epilepsy Foundation Ohio was just formed and represents all of Ohio. They are trying to get the word out. One of the major issues with getting the word out is people (and their families) with the disease keep it a secret because a lot of the general population do not understand the disease. Quite a large number of people are afflicted with Epilepsy. More people live with Epilepsy than Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebral Palsy combined. You know someone with Epilepsy, but may not know that they have it.

Epilepsy is a brain disease that is an electrical storm or electrical misfiring in the brain, causing a person to have repeated seizures.

We usually don’t know exactly why a person has or gets epilepsy.

Common causes of Epilepsy can be linked to

  • Head injury
  • Brain infection
  • Stroke
  • Brain tumor
  • Brain malformations
  • Alzheimer’s or other dementias
  • Genetic and inherited factors

Who Gets Epilepsy

  • About 140,000 people in Ohio have epilepsy or 1.2% of the population
  • 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetimes
  • Epilepsy does not discriminate- it affects all ages, genders, races, religions and social backgrounds

What to do if you see a person having seizure:

  • Stay calm and speak calmly
  • Protect the person from harm and stay with them until the seizure is over
  • Do not hold the person down
  • If they fall to the ground, put a soft item under their head
  • Roll them to their side, if possible, to keep their airway clear
  • Time the Seizure
  • Do not put anything in their mouth

When to call 911

  • If the person has never had a seizure before
  • If they have trouble breathing or waking after the seizure
  • They have another seizure right after the first one
  • They are hurt during the seizure
  • The seizure happens in water
  • The person has a health condition or is pregnant
  • The seizure lasts 5 minutes longer than the usual seizure the person experiences

Epilepsy Treatments:

  • Medications
  • VNS- Vagal Nerve Stimulation
  • RNS- Responsive Neurostimulation
  • Brain surgery
  • Dietary Therapies

Children who have epilepsy

  • Children can have multiple issues, including issues with academic achievement, behavioral and emotional adjustment and social interactions
  • About ¼ of children cannot be controlled with medicine
  • Epilepsy medicines can cause behavior and mood changes/problems
  • Experience bullying at a higher rate than other students- even by school staff

Adults with Epilepsy

  • Often experience discrimination in jobs or school
  • Often bullied or treated differently
  • Often treated like they cannot do what others can
  • Higher risk of depression, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and other mental health issues
  • Medications can cause fatigue, memory problems and other issues
  • Women with epilepsy have issues around pregnancy and birth control effectiveness

Quick Facts About Epilepsy

  • Epilepsy is not a mental illness it is a brain malfunction
  • You can NOT catch epilepsy from another person
  • There are more than 20 types of seizures, either Generalized or Focal
  • Some seizures can go undiagnosed as it looks like the person is just staring into space
