Eric Farrell – Dayton Hoopla (NCAA First Four)

Phather Phil’s Prayer

Prior to Phather Phil giving today’s prayer, Club President Chris McAlpine presented Phather Phil – with his new CNO Club Name Badge that says – quite appropriately – “Phather Phil”…

Heavenly Father we all have accepted that change will always be with us. Yet when ever it is mentioned we resist. “What’s wrong with what we are doing now.”, “we tried that years ago and it didn’t work then.” And on and on! Help us to accept change as an opportunity, not a hindrance and ignore the pounding in our hearts that says “Turn back ,turn back.”. Helen Keller said ” No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars or sailed
to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.” Be with us Lord when we are confronted by change in our future days. Bolster our Optimism so we may have no regrets when we look back on our lives.
May we remember as we go forward , The saddest words of tongue and pen – “It might have been.” Amen!

Today’s Speaker

Matt McAlpine, better known as Chris McAlpine’s brother, introduced today’s speaker Eric Farrell, the Executive Director of Dayton’s “The Big Hoopla”. The Big Hoopla is an Ohio non-profit corporation for the NCAA First Four Local Organizing Committee in the Dayton Region. It started out as a simple single game in 2001 and now has become a 4 game, large community event. Dayton will host the first 4 for the NCAA for the 18th straight year in 2018. Farrell explained it is a year-round effort to put the event on and to keep it as likely as possible that the event stays here at the UD Arena. There are several reasons the NCAA keeps choosing Dayton. The biggest factor is making sure the optics on TV look great. Farrell’s team is able to consistently sell out the stadium and have the ticket holders actually show up and fill the seats which is what the TV folks want. Each year 7200 tickets are given away to local airmen and regional students. Unlike most tickets that are free for sporting events, the fan base here actually shows up. Since 2001, the event has had over 80 million dollars in economic impact to the Dayton Region. Events around the First Four include the Hoopla Stem Challenge for STEM students and the Hoopla four miler, which now has over 500 participants. There is an ongoing effort in the last few years to spread the effects of the additional events out to the suburbs. Centerville residents now represent 8%. A lot of the benefits of this event directly helps kids. Farrell stated we can help by sharing with others what you know about the event to increase awareness about the opportunities for STEM students. Additionally, you can help by getting involved by going to the games, participating in the four miler, and through business sponsorships and donations. Dayton is locked in to host the event through 2022.
