Jeff Sorrell – Dayton Life Enrichment Center

Phather Phil’s Prayer

Heavenly Father recycling is not just for tin cans and paper. To live the good life we need to throw out our bad thoughts and inclinations. You have a junk yard big enough to take all of them. If our attitude needs to be
recycled, we can either put up with the knowledge that rose bushes have thorns or be thankful that thorn bushes have roses. We were made to live in harmony with You and your word. You know if we are on the right tract.
If we know we are not, maybe it’s our time to recycle. Help us to be environmental strong and see life thru gospel glasses.  Amen!

Trick or Treat

Today we mixed it up! As we walked in to today’s meeting we grabbed a piece of candy and it directed us to a table of other people with matching candy. What a great way to meet someone new and increase fellowship.

ATTENTION NEW (and old) MEMBERS: Remember you can sit at any table each week. You will be greeted warmly and find yourself getting to know a new friend. Change tables once in a while, you just might like it!

Today’s Speaker

Debe Dockins introduced Jeff Sorrel, the Executive Director for 16 years of Dayton’s “Life Enrichment Center”, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization. Jeff has been involved in outreach to the underserved for approximately 26 years. Each week 600-800 clients come through the facility. They are located at 425 N. Findlay St. and can be reached at 937-252-5700.

The Life Enrichment Center (LEC) serves lots of people – from the homeless to those with fixed incomes and everything in between. There are 5 paid staff members and a group of 60 volunteers that keep it running. Their goal for incoming clients is to help them navigate through LEC and until eventually they no longer need the facility. The homeless can receive showers, mailboxes, clothing and access to a salon.

The 4 most pressing problems in the Dayton area are: Housing, Hunger, Addiction, Workplace Stabilization. The LEC helps a lot in these areas.

There is a syringe exchange program. Of those asking for new syringes, 25% get referred for treatment. A major effort is put forth to help with opioid and other drug addictions. They make clients better and then help with moving forward.

The bicycle program helps with transportation and is also used to incentivize students to do well at school. The police and others bring in used bikes. The Huffy corporation provides many new bikes. They currently have about 1500 bikes.

The have an Oasis house that helps with issues such as human trafficking and prostitution.

Many other organizations help utilize the 57,000 square feet space inside the LEC. There is an area called the “Recovery Cafe”. They are always looking for other groups to join them in their quest to help their clients.

You can support them by eating at the Findlay Street Café. Hours are Tuesday – Friday 11 am to 2 PM. They serve sandwiches, soups and salads. Carry out is available by calling 937-222-7211.

The LEC gets a lot of volunteer help from nursing students from surrounding colleges. The main source of funding is private donations.

LEC is always looking for volunteers for general help and to teach classes. Come to them with an idea.

Services provided by this wonderful organization are:

  • Meals and Supplemental Groceries
  • Building Community (Bible Class, Craft Class, Relationship Topics)
  • Education Offerings (GED, Computer Learning Lab, Jobs Seminar, English as a Second Language)
  •  Health and Wellness (Fitness Center, Health Programs, Culinary and Nutrition Classes, Health Screenings, Mobile Mammogram, Cholesterol Screenings)
  • Resources and Referrals (Contact is made with clients to assess needs)
  • Financial services (Prepare Tax Returns)
  • The Bike Shoppe and Safety Village.

The culinary curriculum was designed by a professor at Sinclair.

 “Above and Beyond” Awards

Kelly Stone presented three “Above and Beyond” awards today. First, she presented the award to Sue Brubaker because for years she has been willing to contribute countless hours to the club and she is always willing to help when asked. Second, she presented the award to husband and wife Diane and Patrick Arehart for contributing time in numerous CNO related activities early in their CNO memberships. Remember, if you want to volunteer your time to various areas and fundraisers and don’t know how to get started, just reach out to any veteran member and they will be happy to point you in the right direction.
