Tom Novak, Avenue of flags, said that AOF will deliver over 2900 flags for Veterans Day. They need a lot more volunteers for both delivery and pickup. You do not have to commit to both tasks. This time of the year it gets dark early and this reduces the pool of available volunteers who can deliver while it is light outside. Please let Tom know if you can help.

Christy Gariety, Adopt-A-Family chair, announced that 13 members have already said they will participate in this holiday program. Contact her if you would like to participate this year.

Mike Bevis announced there is a press release going out that explains the tree lot fundraiser cancellation for 2020.

Committee Meetings

Sue Jesse, co-chair of the Social Distancing Committee, announced there will be a committee meeting 10/28/2020 at 6 PM at Beth Duncan’s offices for Lizard Apparel and Promotions. You can also connect by Zoom. They are accepting new committee members and they could use additional help.

Janet Piechocki, Hobart Institute of Welding Technology

Nancy Lehren introduced Janet Piechocki, the head of marketing and career development for the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology (HIWT). The ACCSC accredited institute was started by the Hobart company in the 1940’s. HIWT is a nonprofit school located in Troy, Ohio. Janet has been at HIWT for 21 years.

The facility has 345 welding stations and in 2016 a new corporate training facility was added. Over 100,000 welders have been trained.

HIWT is recognized as a global leader. Their books and supplies are sold all around the world.

HIWT has a test facility. Besides testing their student’s work, they test welds for the military and other welding schools.

Requirements for Admission to the Institute

• Applicants must be 16 or older
• Submit $125 fee at the time of registration
• Must present proof high school graduation or G.E.D. prior to start date
• There are no ACT/SAT or GPA requirements

Students can choose between 6-month and 10-month programs.

Students in both programs can earn certifications

• FCAW Vertical/Overhead (X-Ray)

• Titanium (X-Ray)

• 2 inch Pipe 2G & 5G (X-Ray)

Numerous Financial Aid and Scholarship opportunities are available. See slide deck for details. The Centerville Noon Optimist club has been awarding scholarships to this school as part of our Skilled Trades Scholarships.

The longer 10-month program is the most popular. Graduates with the extra certifications have higher salaries, even when doing the same work.

For those that must travel to attend the institute they have a list of affordable housing in the Troy, Ohio area.

Welding is a great career path. There is currently a huge shortage of welders and it is getting worse. It is estimated that 200,000 to 400,00 jobs in welding are currently unfilled. HIWT helps graduates find jobs. They hold 3 job fairs each year. The ROI for attending HIWT is higher than even the most prestigious of colleges. A recent study lists HIWT as 19^th in ROI out of 4500 post high school learning institutions. The slide deck has further statistics.

HIWT has been open during COVID. Students work in every other welding booth. HIWT was recognized as an essential business and was not shut down by the government.
