Community Champion Awards Presented

There are two recipients of the award this year. Tonya Johns started Operation Prom Dress in 2011. This outreach event gives each young woman a dress, shoes, purse, hair styling, make-up, a meal, various door prizes, and a bible. Jani Rice helped expand the fertility preservation program at Dayton Children’s Hospital. She obtained funds to help offset costs for the patients and created and implemented education sheets for the fertility program.

Taryn Filer – Holiday Traditions

Taryn is an Adult Services Specialist with the Washington-Centerville Public Library. She has worked for the library since December, 2017 and was quickly scooped up into the Speaker’s Bureau. Taryn researched and put together information about the various winter holidays after getting requests for a seasonal presentation. She discussed a list of the Winter Holiday celebrations.

Wayne Davis – Centerville City Manager

Wayne has been the City Manager of Centerville since August 2017. For 17 years he worked for the City of Montgomery, five years as city manager, seven years as assistant city manager, and five years as finance director. He guided the city through the purchase of several key parcels to assemble the Gateway Redevelopment Area project; established substantial shared-service partnerships and oversaw successful strategic plans over the year.

Terri Oroszi – Terrorism in Ohio

Donna Huss introduced Terry L. Oroszi, M.S., Ed.D., Assistant Professor, Pharmacology & Toxicology; Director, MS Graduate Program, P&T, BSOM; Director, CBRN Defense Certificate Program at Wright State University. She is also a faculty member at the medical center. She has authored two books about terrorism so far with another about to be released. She has also published several articles. She was here to today to discuss terrorists in and from Ohio.

Heavier than Air Brewing Co. – Anthony Rocco – Dayton Freight Company

There are two major types of truck shipments. Full truckload (TL) and less than truckload (LTL). TL Shipments account for 400 billion of the 700 billion shipping business each year. Dayton Freight is in the LTL business. Dayton Freight is a regional carrier in the Midwest with sales of about 60 billion annually. The goal of the company is to be the best regional LTL carrier in the Midwest.

Phil Parker – President – Dayton Chamber of Commerce

The unemployment rate in our area is 4.7%, the lowest in decades though slightly higher than the national average. Low unemployment is a double-edged sword. The number one concern for area employers is the availability of skilled workers. He said we should continue to watch what is going on north of town for the distribution centers being built, including for pet supplier Chewy.com. Dayton has created a niche market for distribution. North Dayton is great for distribution because of the access to highways and the airport.

Coach Don Donoher

Don was the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Dayton from 1964 to 1989. He compiled a record of 437-275. In 1968 they won the NIT championship and in 1967 they were the runners-up in the NCAA. He was the athletic director from 1976 to 1980. He became coach after Tom Blackburn lost his battle with cancer in 1964. Blackburn was head coach from 1947 to 1964.
