Centerville Football Coach John Puckett

Erin Dickerson’s Prayer

Lord,

Our earthly life contains the occasional stormy time. We may feel as though we are being rained down on, blown around by the wind, or tossed and turned as though we are inside of a tornado. Just like our ever-changing weather outside, we fail to recognize the storms in our life will pass as well. Help us to keep an optimistic outlook as we weather the storms in our lives and to remember you are with us through it all.

Amen.

Centerville Football Coach John Puckett

Cameron Langer introduced today’s guest speaker, John Puckett, Head Football Coach of the Centerville Elks. Cameron shared that John was his coach for three years. John played football, basketball, and baseball at Chaminade Julienne and is a member of the CJ Athletic Hall of Fame. He went on to play at Saginaw Valley State in Michigan and is currently the President of the Miami Valley Football Coaches Association.

Family and Coaching Background

Coach Puckett said he lives in Centerville and has four sons, including identical twin sons. One of his sons is a recruiting specialist for the University of Alabama football program, and his youngest son is a golfer at CHS. He also described his coaching journey through seven programs in four states, including stops in Indiana, South Carolina, and Michigan, and said that living in Michigan made him a bigger Ohio State fan.

From Transactional to Transformational

Puckett credited Ron Ullery for bringing him to Centerville in 2010 and said his approach changed over time. He explained that he started out as a transactional coach, focused on doing the job and getting results, but Centerville helped him see how much more impact a coach can have on young men beyond the field.

Tough and Thankful

He said the program’s core values are to be tough and to be thankful. Toughness, he explained, is how you respond to life on life’s terms. Gratitude is recognizing the people and opportunities that help you grow.

Thankful Thursday

One example was “Thankful Thursday,” where players and coaches text someone with a specific thank-you for something they have done. He said the goal is to make gratitude specific and practiced, not generic.

Bigger than Wins and Losses

Coach Puckett said Centerville football is bigger than the scoreboard. The focus is helping players become better brothers, better teammates, and better young men, and carrying those habits home. He talked about being “tough and together” and the program’s black flag mindset of continuing to work and compete.

Closing and Community Support

He noted that many coaches on the current staff are CHS graduates and said this year’s team includes multiple college prospects. He closed by inviting the club to contact him if there are opportunities for the football team to serve local businesses or the community, saying the answer will always be yes.

Thank you

Thank you, Coach John Puckett, for sharing the Centerville football mindset and for the work you and your staff do to help develop young men on and off the field.
