Phather Phil’s Prayer
Heavenly Father for most of our adult life our minds are drawn to the noise of life. On a beautiful day we rarely start the day with a “Thank you Lord.” The news tells us all the bad things that have happened while we slept.
Our minds grasp the ugly and holds on to it. We become our own worst enemy. You have blest us as Optimist to sluff off the ugly noise of life and hold on to the good. So thank you Lord for this great day and the opportunity to give, especially to the kids . Amen!

Debe Dockins introduced our speaker, Lela Klein, a Harvard Law school grad and executive director of the Greater Dayton Union Cooperative Initiative. Lela spoke to us about the proposed Gem City market and the food crisis that exists in the West Dayton community. Currently funds are being raised as the 15,000 sq ft market will cost about $4 million to build. Shares are being sold at $100 each and the goal is to have the market employee and community owned. Over 5,300 children live in the area that Gem City market will serve. Nutritional and cooking classes will be offered and the hope is that the market will become a community gathering place.
