Hansgen is a long time WHIO Radio Personality, the voice of the UD Flyers, and a stand-up comic. After our first speaker cancelled last minute, Hansgen graciously agreed to speak as a replacement. The subject today was the Lafayette Escadrille squadron from World War I. The squadron was comprised of 38 American pilots who felt strongly that they wanted to help the French fight the Germans years before the USA joined the war. America has forgotten this story but the French have not. More than 250 American pilots fought with the French Air Service before the USA joined the war.

This year’s award was presented to married couple, Mindy and Dean Heyne. From their experiences, Dean and Mindy have learned that they judge much less; you never know what others are dealing with and the levels can be extreme. They appreciate ALL types of diversity, not just the typical diversity associate with race. He gave a big thank you to CNO for feeding the numerous kids we invited today and for the huge amount in savings it was for their budget!

The Victoria Theatre Association (VTA) has many kid-focused programs. The Discovery Series, started in 1991, has had over 1 million participants so far. Around 27,000 kids experience the series annually. VTA is currently building an Art Annex with 250 seats to allow even more opportunities for children.

This year’s topics is “Where Are My Roots of Optimism?” We have names our contest the “Margaret Barclay Memorial Oratorical Contest.” Margaret was the committee chair of the contest for many years and a past president of our club. Margaret was a longtime teacher and the principal of Magsig Middle School. Her husband, Roy Barclay, still generously sponsors the financial awards for our contestants. He spoke to us for a few minutes and it was great to hear about his wife and her service to kids, Centerville, and CNO.
