Our club was started in 1968 so for Tuesday, June 19, 2018, there was no lunch meeting. Instead we had a wonderful evening of feast and fellowship at Canopy Creek Farm. This was a great night to celebrate all we have accomplished in being a Friend of Youth for 50 years!

Today we presented the Friend of Youth Award. Congratulations to this year’s winner Jason Whitehead. He was nominated by CHS principal Jack Durnbaugh. Formed in 1976, the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) is a regional consortium of 23 colleges and universities in southwest Ohio to promote educated, employed, and engaged citizens. Every year we honor one law enforcement person from the Centerville Police Department and one from the Washington Township Sheriff’s Department. The award is named in honor of John P. Kalaman who lost his life in the line of duty 20 years ago. The honoree from the CPD is officer Fauopo Lauofo. The honoree from the Sheriff’s Department is Detective Linda Shutts.

Curt Nelson was a pilot in the USAF. He is the Executive director of the Wright Image Group. The group would like Dayton to have a National Monument, The Triumph of Flight as recognizable as the Statue of Liberty or the St. Louis Arch. The monument would be located in the South West corner of where I-75 and I-70 intersect.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine. In the U.S. 33,000, have the disease, which is about 0.009% of the population. The median age now is 47. Over half of all those with CF are over the age of 18.

This year’s topic is “Can Society Function Without Respect.” Seventy clubs participate in this in Ohio. One winner from each club will compete at the state level and receive a $2500 scholarship. If the winner is from our club, we add an additional $1000. All three students presenting are seniors at CHS. In third place was Grace Hemmeter, in second place was Luke Suazo, and in first place was Melissa Elias.
