Thank You 2018-2019 President Donna Huss
Today’s lunch was the last lunch of Donna Huss’s year as president of the awesome Centerville Noon Optimist Club. Thank you, Donna, for a great year. CNO is now the largest Optimist club in the world and arguably the best. Please accept our gratitude and enjoy your semi-retirement.
Optimist of the Year Presentation
During lunch today, the Optimist of the Year was presented. Last year’s recipients, Diane Arehart and Greg Fay, presented the award.
The 2018-2019 Optimist of the Year recipient is Beth Duncan. Congratulations Beth, you are more than deserving of this award.
The Optimist of the Year Award is chosen at a special meeting arranged and hosted by the previous year’s recipients. The voting group is composed of previous recipients of the award.
Beth joined CNO in 2016. Since then, some of the activities she has volunteered for are Avenue of Flags, Build a Bear, Easter Egg Hunt and the Fishing Derby.
She is the Chair of the Social Committee and she is a Christmas Tree Lot Captain.
Beth has served on our Board of Directors and has been involved with the Golf Committee, the Junior Golf Committee and the 2.0 Committee.
Beth and her company Lizard Apparel and Promotions have been generous in donating apparel for different club functions including our golf outings.

Dayton Children’s Hospital Presentation
Mike Bevis introduced pediatric neurosurgeon Rob Lober, MD, PhD and Rachel Selby, Philanthropy Officer from Dayton Children’s Hospital. Rachel is also a member of CNO. Dr. Lober and Rachel were here today to accept two checks from CNO, one check for $14,500 from the proceeds of the golf outing and another check for $5000 which was the fifth check we pledged to give over five years in 2015.
Dr. Lober served his residency at Stanford Hospitals and Clinics in Stanford, California. He earned his medical degree and a PhD in Biomedical science at Georgia Regents University in Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Lober is a member of the Scientific Committee for The Children’s Brain Tumor Tissue Consortium.

Dayton Children’s Hospital is on the front lines of Brain Tumor research. Some of the major research for pediatric brain tumors is happening right here in Dayton and contributing internationally.

Dayton Children’s Hospital (DCH) is unique in the world. When Dr. Lober was hired about 30 other experts in their fields were also hired. DCH is a model for hospitals that can help kids locally.
The occurrence of pediatric cancer is rarer than adult cancers, but the successful cure rate for many types of pediatric cancer is now much higher. Because of research, pediatric treatments of pediatric leukemias are very successful. The rarer brain tumors now kill more children than leukemia. Research has helped, but we need more research into pediatric brain tumors. Unfortunately, there has not been significant breakthroughs in decades. He wants to change this.
Dr. Lober’s plan starts with wasting nothing. Instead of disposing of removed tumors, they keep every bit of tissues and fluid’s and make them available to any research facilities for free. The policy is free and open access to the saved materials. Several other organizations have joined this effort. This project is called the Living Biobank at Dayton Children’s.
Every patient and their families so far have agreed to the removed materials. Most of the time there is no direct benefit to the donating patient. One child called his tumor a “Growbot” and he knew he was going to die from his tumor. But he knew his “Growbot” would one day help many other children. Donating a “Growbot” will not help him, but it may help another child and family one day. Dr. Lober’s group has become experienced at culturing and growing the tumors after removal for sharing with other researchers. They are 100% supported by philanthropy. This is all great because in the past there was a financial opportunity that was holding back research.
Dr. Lober has a 20-year plan of establishing a pipeline for the tissue specimen transfers. Other hospitals have started sending their removed tissues. He wants to improve the science of tissue culture and banking. He wants to expand the application of culture tissues. They are in preliminary talks with the Broad Institute that can culture samples in up to 60 different environments. He wants to find numerous chemotherapies to cure children with these tumors.
Dr. Lober explained some things that makes DCH great. DCH has 2 full pediatric surgeons. DCH provides the greatest care a child can get. They have the latest in advanced robotics. Soon they are getting the latest tissue diagnostic equipment. This will enable results in 3 minutes instead of 5 days. This increases the safety and the accuracy of tumor removal.
The government is not running this research. It is because of donations form groups like CNO that allows Dayton Children’s to make the progress it has. He said he truly thanks us.

Tom Frazier Tee Off for Youth Golf 2019 Report
Donna introduced Mike Bevis, the chair of the golf committee. Mike mentioned that 2019 marks the 28th year this CNO fundraiser has been held. Mike has been the chair for 16 years.
Mike started by thanking all members of the Centerville Noon Optimist club. It is not just a committee project. The whole club is asked and steps up by donating gift cards, wines, and time. He also thanked his committee members.
Additionally, Mike thanked members who purchased foursomes. CNO Member Don Kelley has participated in the event all 28 years.

Good afternoon and thank you Donna for the time today to thank everyone for their efforts on the 28th annual 2019 Tom Frazier Tee Off for Youth Golf Classic. This is a fun day to celebrate and recognize those who work so hard especially during this record year.
It has been two months since that hot day in July. We’ve had some time to reflect on our success. Every year we spend more than six months planning this event and of course, we spend the same amount of time asking you to volunteer, golf, sponsor and donate. So, as you can see, this is a total club project. Thank you to everyone for working so hard to help with this effort. With more than 1,000 golf outings each year it seems to get tougher each year. But with your help and Sycamore Creek CC, we had another excellent year.
We brought in 148 golfers and delivered almost $45,000 (Last year was $36,000) in revenue for our club.
