Alexis Larsen – Dayton Art Institute

The DAI is celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the founding of the Dayton Art Institute. The “Gem on the Hill” was founded on February 28, 1919. The museum was opened to the public on January 10, 1930. In 2019, DAI will celebrate by launching 100 events at the museum. There will be numerous improvements to the building and grounds with many changes for improved accessibility. The improvements are estimated to cost $9.7 million.

Boys and Girls Oratorical Contest

Today we have the second group of participants for the Margaret Barclay Memorial 2019 Optimist Oratorical Contest. Since it was established in 1928, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program sponsored by Optimist International. It is done in collaboration with Centerville Evening and South Metro Optimists, who also sponsor contests.

Josh Staley – FC Cincinnati

FC Cincinnati is an MLS soccer club based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The club was started 3 years ago. They will begin play in Major League Soccer in 2019. Josh is a graduate of Centerville High School and Chris McAlpine coached him in soccer when he was age 10 through age 16. Josh highlighted the accomplishments and growth of FC Cincinnati and showed a video about the club.

Community Champion Awards Presented

There are two recipients of the award this year. Tonya Johns started Operation Prom Dress in 2011. This outreach event gives each young woman a dress, shoes, purse, hair styling, make-up, a meal, various door prizes, and a bible. Jani Rice helped expand the fertility preservation program at Dayton Children’s Hospital. She obtained funds to help offset costs for the patients and created and implemented education sheets for the fertility program.

Taryn Filer – Holiday Traditions

Taryn is an Adult Services Specialist with the Washington-Centerville Public Library. She has worked for the library since December, 2017 and was quickly scooped up into the Speaker’s Bureau. Taryn researched and put together information about the various winter holidays after getting requests for a seasonal presentation. She discussed a list of the Winter Holiday celebrations.

Wayne Davis – Centerville City Manager

Wayne has been the City Manager of Centerville since August 2017. For 17 years he worked for the City of Montgomery, five years as city manager, seven years as assistant city manager, and five years as finance director. He guided the city through the purchase of several key parcels to assemble the Gateway Redevelopment Area project; established substantial shared-service partnerships and oversaw successful strategic plans over the year.

Terri Oroszi – Terrorism in Ohio

Donna Huss introduced Terry L. Oroszi, M.S., Ed.D., Assistant Professor, Pharmacology & Toxicology; Director, MS Graduate Program, P&T, BSOM; Director, CBRN Defense Certificate Program at Wright State University. She is also a faculty member at the medical center. She has authored two books about terrorism so far with another about to be released. She has also published several articles. She was here to today to discuss terrorists in and from Ohio.
